Overview
This exploration started as Build Week research and graduated into the Labs hub as a playable Path. Networking is framed as a learning loop—not collecting impressive people, but learning how to begin, deepen, and continue useful relationships.
In twenty minutes of planning, a learner builds a small “constellation” around one real college goal, then leaves with a 48-hour real-world mission and a reason-based follow-up. Every practice creates something usable: a question, an introduction, a conversation plan, a follow-up, or evidence that confidence is changing.
Time: 20 minutes to plan, followed by one small real-world mission.
Networking Is a Learning Loop
UC Berkeley describes networking as a career conversation where people gather and share information. Harvard and Yale similarly emphasize informational conversations as a way to learn about roles, paths, and communities—not simply to ask for a job.
Use this loop:
- Wonder: decide what you genuinely want to learn.
- Reach: ask one person for a small conversation.
- Listen: notice a story, insight, or next question.
- Return: thank them, act on something useful, and reconnect when there is a reason.
The first goal is not “build a huge network.” It is have one useful, human conversation.
Choose Your North Star
First, choose the outcome that matters most right now.
- Explore a career or field
- Prepare for internships or jobs
- Build relationships on campus
- Become more confident starting conversations
Make Your North Star Specific
Use the outcome you selected to complete one sentence:
Over the next ___ weeks, I want networking to help me learn / decide / practice / find ___.
Examples:
- “In four weeks, I want to learn what data analysts actually do during an ordinary workday.”
- “Before internship applications open, I want to decide whether product design fits my strengths.”
- “This semester, I want to become comfortable starting conversations with professors.”
Define evidence that would make the goal real:
- conversations completed;
- questions answered;
- introductions or follow-ups attempted;
- confidence before and after each attempt;
- one decision or action changed by what you learned.
Your North Star is allowed to change. A conversation that changes your direction is progress, not failure.
Set Your Practice Level
Choose the version that feels challenging but possible today.

If confidence is 1–2 out of 5, start with Warm-up. At 3, try Stretch. At 4–5, choose any level based on your goal—not ego.
Coach encouragement: “Choosing a smaller mission is not avoiding growth. It is designing a practice you can actually complete.”
Map People by Perspective
Put your North Star in the center. Around it, name one possible person in each orbit:

Circle the person who is most relevant and easiest to approach, not the person with the most impressive title.
Creative constraint: your first constellation may contain only four people. Depth beats collecting names.
Build a 15-Second Introduction
Create your introduction from three small pieces:
Present: “I’m a second-year computer science student…”
Curiosity: “…exploring how network engineers keep systems reliable…”
Bridge: “…and your work on the campus network made me curious about what beginners often misunderstand.”
Adapt the length:
- 5 seconds: name + shared context;
- 15 seconds: present + curiosity + bridge;
- 30 seconds: add one experience or reason the topic matters to you.
Avoid reciting a résumé. The introduction succeeds when it gives the other person an easy place to enter the conversation.
Ask Questions That Create a Conversation
Begin broad, listen, then climb toward detail:
- Story: “How did you first become interested in this field?”
- Reality: “What does a normal week look like that students rarely see?”
- Judgment: “What separates someone who enjoys this work from someone who only likes the idea of it?”
- Action: “What is one small project or experience you would recommend at my stage?”
- Bridge forward: “Is there another perspective I should seek before making this decision?”
Choose only three questions. A good conversation follows what the person says instead of racing through a script.
Listening challenge: after each answer, ask one follow-up that begins with what, how, or why.
The Awkward-Moment Simulator
Networking confidence grows when you know how to recover—not when nothing awkward happens.

Your Next 48-Hour Mission
Warm-up
Ask one classmate: “What helped you choose this course, club, or major?”
Stretch
After class or at office hours, use your 15-second introduction and ask one Curiosity Ladder question.
Expedition
Send a brief request:
Subject: Student curious about your path into ___
Hello ___, I’m a ___ student exploring ___. I found your work through ___. Would you be open to a 15–20 minute conversation about your experience? I’m especially curious about ___. I understand if your schedule does not allow it. Thank you for considering it.
Set a deadline, location, and backup version. If the full mission becomes impossible, complete the next smaller version instead of abandoning the practice.
Record What Changed
Immediately after the mission, capture five signals:

Do not score the interaction by whether it produced an internship, referral, or immediate reply. Score the behaviors you control: preparation, curiosity, listening, recovery, gratitude, and follow-through.
Turn Contact Into Continuity
Within 24 hours, send a short thank-you that proves you listened:
Thank you for explaining ___. Your point about ___ changed how I’m thinking about ___. I’m going to try ___. I appreciate your time.
Then choose a reason-based return, not a calendar-only ping:
- you tried their advice and can share what happened;
- you found a resource connected to the conversation;
- you reached a milestone they helped shape;
- you have one thoughtful new question.

Then choose the next move from evidence:
- If starting was hardest: repeat a Warm-up with three different people and keep the same introduction.
- If continuing was hardest: practice the Curiosity Ladder and two follow-up questions.
- If anxiety stayed high: shorten the next mission and rehearse the awkward moment first.
- If the conversation flowed: move one orbit outward or ask for a longer informational conversation.
- If your goal changed: redraw the constellation around the new North Star.
Weekly rhythm:
- one conversation;
- one useful follow-up;
- one reflection;
- one next mission chosen from evidence.

Observations
- Conventional networking advice often describes the correct behavior but gives learners little rehearsal for uncertainty, rejection, or awkward pauses.
- A college student’s nearest useful network already includes peers, teaching assistants, faculty, staff, supervisors, alumni, and community members.
- Counting contacts can reward shallow activity; evidence tied to learning, confidence, and follow-through better matches the learner’s goal.
Implications for PathMX / Build Week

Next experiment
Test this path with one college student. Observe whether they can select a realistic mission, complete it within 48 hours, and use their evidence to choose the next practice without needing a generic “network more” instruction.
